What roof rats look like
Roof rats are slender, dark brown to black rats with tails longer than their bodies. They are excellent climbers and nest high: in attics, trees, ivy and dense vines.
Signs to look for
- Running or scratching in the attic at night
- Droppings in the attic, garage or along rafters
- Gnawed fruit on citrus and other backyard trees
- Greasy rub marks on beams and along wires
Roof rats in the Sacramento area
Roof rats are common across the Sacramento region, especially under mature tree canopies and in yards with citrus, figs and other fruit. Activity picks up in fall and winter when they look for warm nests.
Prevention tips
- Trim branches and vines at least a few feet back from the roof
- Pick up fallen fruit and harvest ripe fruit
- Store pet food and bird seed in sealed containers
- Have roof vents and gaps sealed
