What earwigs look like
Earwigs are reddish brown insects with pincers on the back end. The pincers look scary, but earwigs are mostly a nuisance indoors.
Signs to look for
- Earwigs under doormats, pots and outdoor cushions
- Insects inside near doors and in bathrooms
- Chewed leaves and flowers in the garden
Earwigs in the Sacramento area
Earwigs love damp mulch, ground cover and planters, and they come indoors under doors in spring and summer, especially in newer neighborhoods with fresh landscaping and heavy irrigation.
Prevention tips
- Cut back dense ground cover near the house
- Avoid overwatering near the foundation
- Add door sweeps
- Move mulch a few inches back from the foundation
