What argentine ants look like
Argentine ants are small, light to dark brown ants that travel in long, busy trails. Colonies are huge and connected, with many queens.
Signs to look for
- Long trails along counters, baseboards and windows
- Ants clustering at sinks, pet bowls and sweets
- Trails entering through outlets, cracks and door frames
Argentine ants in the Sacramento area
Argentine ants are the most common trail ant in the Sacramento Valley. Irrigated yards keep colonies large all summer, and the first fall rains push them indoors in big numbers. Hot, dry spells also send them inside for water.
Prevention tips
- Wipe trails with soapy water instead of spraying them
- Store sweets in sealed containers
- Fix leaks
- Keep mulch and plants away from the foundation
