Which cockroach do you have?

German cockroaches are small, light brown, and live indoors, usually in kitchens and bathrooms. They breed fast and are the most common reason for repeated cockroach problems in homes, apartments and restaurants.

American cockroaches are large and reddish brown. They often live in sewers, drains, and damp areas outside, and wander inside through plumbing and gaps.

Oriental cockroaches are dark and shiny and like cool, damp places such as crawlspaces, basements, and around water meters and drains.

The type matters because each one lives in different places and needs a different approach. Small roaches in the kitchen during the day is a different problem from a large roach coming up a drain at night.

Signs of a cockroach problem

• Seeing roaches during the day, which often means a larger population is hiding
• Small dark droppings that look like pepper or coffee grounds in cabinets and drawers
• Egg cases behind appliances or in cabinet hinges
• A musty smell in heavy infestations

How we treat cockroaches

We start by finding where the roaches are living and how they are getting food and water. In kitchens that usually means behind and under appliances, inside cabinets, around plumbing, and in wall voids. Treatment is placed where the roaches hide and travel, not just where you saw one. Some problems, especially German cockroaches, take follow-up visits to clear up because eggs hatch after the first treatment.

What helps between visits

• Clean up crumbs and grease, especially around the stove and under the refrigerator
• Do not leave dishes, pet food, or open food out overnight
• Fix leaks under sinks and around appliances
• Cut down on cardboard and clutter, which give roaches places to hide
• Seal gaps around pipes where they go through walls
